The Veterinary Section of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is committed to ensuring animal health and public safety through a range of services and initiatives. Led by the Chief Veterinary Officer under the guidance of the Medical Officer of Health, the section undertakes various critical activities, including the operation of the slaughterhouse, animal birth control programs, management of municipal markets, and more.
Key Activities
1. Operation & Maintenance of Slaughterhouse
- - Established in 1948 at Salunke Vihar Road, Kondhwa, the slaughterhouse is equipped with modern mechanical facilities and an effluent treatment plant.
- - Certified by FSSAI, HACCP, and HALAL, it operates under the consent of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board.
- - Fees: Rs. 15/- per small animal, Rs. 80 per large animal, plus a pre-slaughter inspection fee of Rs. 200/-.
- - Managed by a team of veterinary officers, engineers, technicians, and permanent employees.
2. Quality Control Laboratory at Kondhwa
- - Quality Control Laboratory funded by the Government of India, leased to a private agency for 10 years with annual rent increases.
- - Ensures the safety and quality of food and water samples.
3. Municipal Meat & Fish & Beef Markets
- - Management of 14 mutton markets, 5 fish markets, and 1 beef market, ensuring compliance with health standards.
- - Fees: Rs. 400/-month for mutton and fish markets, Rs. 600/month for beef markets, with an annual license fee of Rs. 300/-
4. Health Licenses for Private Butcher Shops
- - Annual fees: Rs. 1000 for mutton, beef, chicken, and pork; Rs. 500 for fish.
- - Active enforcement against unlicensed sellers to ensure public health and safety.
5. Disposal of Dead Animals
- - 24/7 service for the collection and environmentally safe disposal of dead animals.
- - Managed by SH. Pawar Transport, with cremation facilities located at Naidu Pond and Mundhwa Keshavnagar. (Contact - 7020364459, 9022094073)
6. Dog & Cat ABC (Animal Birth Control) Program
- - Sterilization and vaccination efforts to control stray animal populations, reducing the birth rate of stray dogs by 42.87% since 2018.
- - Collaboration with NGOs such as CCC and Universal Animal Welfare Association for effective program implementation. (Contact - Vijay Ovhal 98901 46832, Universal Animal Welfare Association - 8655455100).
According to the guidelines of the World Health Organization, sterilization is the only scientific method to reduce the number of stray dogs in developing countries. Killing the dogs or relocating them is not a solution. Dogs are social animals. If some dogs are relocated from one area, other dogs will move into that area. It is not feasible to vaccinate or sterilize newly arriving dogs each time. Therefore, to achieve long-term results, sterilizing all dogs is the appropriate solution.
The Dog Squad of Pune Municipal Corporation will catch all such stray dogs and perform sterilization surgery on them. They will also be vaccinated with anti-rabies shots and will be released back to the place where they were captured within five days. The right ear of the dog will be notched to indicate that it has been sterilized. According to the law, dogs must be returned to the location from which they were picked up.
As per certain provisions of the Animal Birth Control Act 2023, the following actions are legal offenses:
- - Removing lactating female dogs and their puppies.
- - Removing puppies younger than six months.
- - Removing sterilized dogs again.
- - Transferring dogs from one place to another.
- - Relocating these dogs outside the city limits.
How can you help?
- - Assist the municipal corporation in identifying stray dogs in your area so they can be sterilized.
- - Do not insist that PMC employees relocate these dogs from your area.
- - Avoid throwing garbage on the streets as an increase in waste leads to a higher breeding rate among dogs.
- - Educate others about the importance of dog sterilization.
- - Each society should adopt at least one stray dog, taking responsibility for its feeding, sterilization, and vaccination. These dogs will protect your society and deter other dogs from entering.
7.Stray Pig Control
- - Appointed for the management and capture of stray pigs to prevent property damage and public nuisance. (Contact – farmer’s Choice 9854444111).
8. Shifting of Cattle Sheds
- - Relocation of cattle sheds to Mundhwa Keshavnagar to improve animal management and welfare.
9. Online Pet Registration
- - Launched to facilitate easy documentation and licensing for pet owners.
- - Available for dog and cat owners within PMC limits, streamlining the process of obtaining new licenses.
