The License and Sky Sign Department is an independent department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and serves as one of its revenue sources. This department operates under the supervision of the Additional Municipal Commissioner (Estate). Its functions are carried out as per Sections 244 and 245 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act and the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Sky Sign and Advertisement Display Regulations, 2022, notified by the state government.
As per Section 244, the department grants permission and renews licenses for advertisement boards and name boards displayed within PMC limits. As per Section 245, the department takes action to remove unauthorized advertisement boards.
Advertisers and concerned authorities must follow the Maharashtra Prevention of Defacement Act, 1995, and other applicable laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines. Advertisement boards should not affect the city's aesthetics and should be installed in a manner that does not obstruct public movement or pose a risk to pedestrians. The maximum validity for new advertisement boards is three years. After this period, renewal applications can be submitted to the competent authority. Every authorized advertisement board must have a unique identification number and a QR Code. Advertisers must obtain a structural stability certificate from a municipal corporation-licensed structural engineer.
