Among the major services provided to citizens within the municipal limits, fire-fighting services are a critical responsibility of the PMC. To fulfill this duty, the Pune Municipal Corporation has established a Fire Brigade. Under this service, in the event of a fire, natural or man-made disaster, or accident within or outside the municipal limits of Pune, the Fire Brigade promptly provides the necessary assistance to citizens. There are a total of 20 fire stations operating in various locations within Pune city.
Considering the growing expansion of the Pune Municipal Corporation, plans are in place to establish 5 new fire stations in different areas of the city:
- Mohammadwadi
- Baner
- Kharadi
- Dhayari
- Bavdhan
The old building of the headquarters of the Pune Fire Brigade has been demolished, and construction of a new "Main Administrative Center" is underway.
The Pune Fire Brigade has a total of 910 approved posts in various positions, and currently, 491 officers and staff are working. There are 419 vacant positions in various categories within the Fire Brigade. Recently, the recruitment of 160 personnel for the position of Fire Rescuer has been completed, and for the first time, a woman has been appointed to the position of Fire Rescuer at the central fire station.
The Fire Brigade operates various types of fire-fighting vehicles, and detailed information about them is attached.
The Fire Brigade regularly organizes lectures and demonstrations on fire prevention measures for housing societies, schools, colleges, malls, multiplexes, hospitals, slums, industrial estates, government offices, and other locations within Pune city. These sessions provide basic information on fire prevention and offer guidance on how to protect oneself from fire hazards."
Fire safety tips often recommended by fire brigades:
- Stop, Drop, and Roll: If your clothes catch fire, stop immediately, drop to the ground, and roll to put the fire out.
- Stay Low in Smoke: If you're caught in smoke, stay low to the ground where the air is clearer and try to exit quickly.
- Close Doors Behind You: When evacuating, close doors to limit the spread of fire and smoke.
- Don't Use Elevators: Always use the stairs during a fire evacuation to avoid being trapped.
- Alert Others: If you're safe, alert others in the building and help them evacuate calmly.
- Avoid Re-entering: Never go back into a burning building for any reason until it’s deemed safe by fire professionals.
- Stay Calm and Follow Instructions: Listen to firefighters or emergency services and stay calm during evacuation or rescue operations.
- Don’t Block Exits: Ensure pathways and exits are clear of obstructions, especially during fire drills or in emergency situations.
- Know How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: Familiarize yourself with the PASS method: Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep from side to side.
- Have a Fire Plan: Regularly practice a fire drill and ensure everyone knows the escape routes and procedures.
