The Maharashtra Slum Areas (Improvement, Clearance and Redevelopment) Act, 1971 is a law enacted for the improvement, clearance and redevelopment of slums in Maharashtra. The primary objective of this Act is to improve the lives of people living in slums, to provide them with good and safe housing and to facilitate the development of cities. This law is important to bring about positive changes in the lives of slum dwellers and to grant them the right to live a better life.
Until the year 2008, the work of the Slum Clearance and Rehabilitation (S.C.R.) Department was being carried out through the main department. As per the powers delegated through Resolution No. 1/455 dated 29/07/2008 by the Hon. Municipal Commissioner, Pune Municipal Corporation, all works related to the S.C.R. Department were decentralized and all powers were vested in the Competent Authority, i.e., the Deputy Commissioners of Zones 1 to 5. The work related to Slum Clearance and Rehabilitation (S.C.R.) in the jurisdiction is carried out through the 15 regional offices under the control of the respective Hon. Deputy Commissioner and Competent Authority of Zones 1 to 5. The Deputy Commissioner (S.C.R.) functions as the coordinator.
