Department information
- The gardens in Pune city can be classified into Botanical Gardens and modernly designed gardens.
- From 1918 to 1938, as the population of Pune city increased, many buildings began to rise across the city.
- Starting from 1938, public gardens were systematically created and opened for citizens to enhance their health and the beauty of the city.
- In 1950, when the Municipal Corporation came into existence, a new phase in the history of gardens began. The Pune Municipal Corporation took control of approximately 18 gardens from the municipal and suburban areas. These included gardens such as Mahatma Gandhi Garden (Bund Garden), Dr. Chima Garden, Peshwa Park, Shahu Garden, Sarasbaug, Sambhaji Garden, and others.
- On April 1, 1950, a separate account was started for managing all the gardens in the city.
- At the time, the Pune Municipal Corporation's area was 243.48 sq. km. Currently, as per the Maharashtra Government, Municipal Development Department's notification No. PMC-2020 / Pr.Kr.322 / Navi-22, dated 30/06/2021, 23 new villages have been included within the Pune Municipal Corporation limits.
- With the inclusion of these areas and previously included regions, the total area of Pune Municipal Corporation has now expanded to 484.61 sq. km.
- As of today, the Pune Municipal Corporation has created a total of 211 gardens under the garden department, within the jurisdiction of 15 regional offices, as per Section 66(10) of the Maharashtra Municipal Act, 1949.
- These gardens are frequently visited by citizens, children, and even foreign nationals. Consequently, these gardens are maintained in optimal condition.
- The Garden Department has developed gardens based on various themes. These include Rose Garden, Lake Garden, Ayurvedic Garden, Nala Park, Energy Park, Adventure Playground, Mughal-style Garden, Japanese Garden, Butterfly Garden, Environmental Garden, Memory Garden, Seven Wonders Park, Nana-Nani Garden, Village Culture Garden, Palm Garden, Nakshatra Garden, Topiary Garden, and Cactus Garden.
- The city's gardens are not just developed for citizens' entertainment or leisure; each garden provides information, replicas, and characteristics of nature's diversity. These gardens are the backbone of the Municipal Corporation in maintaining the city's health, keeping the environment pollution-free, and promoting environmental growth.
- The gardens feature various flowers, plants, vines, trees, play equipment, wildlife, birds, as well as imaginative and realistic art works. The successful and creative layout of each garden has made it unique and attractive. The jogging tracks, laughter clubs, and exercise equipment in the gardens help citizens maintain a joyful and healthy lifestyle.
- For its significant achievements in environmental conservation, the Pune Municipal Corporation was awarded the "Maharashtra Vanashri Award" in 1993 and the "Indira Priyadarshini Award" by the Government of India in 2004.
