Fire Safety Tips for Adults

Kitchen Safety

  • Always stay alert while cooking. Distraction can lead to a fire in the kitchen.
  • Ensure that your clothes do not come in contact with fire.
  • Towels, wooden spoons, and food packaging can catch fire quickly. Keep these items away from stoves and flames.
  • Keep hot pans, matchsticks, and lighters away from children.
  • Keep young children away from the kitchen. Educate older children about cooking safety.

Protection from Heat:

  • Do not place hot food or liquids on the edge of tables or counters.
  • Avoid holding small children while cooking.
  • Check the water temperature before bathing young children.
  • Keep children away from hot water or heaters.

Electrical Equipment Safety:

  • Use electrical sockets carefully. Overloading sockets can cause overheating and fire.
  • Never handle electrical appliances with wet clothes or shoes.
  • Remember to switch off appliances like irons, toasters, and heaters after use.
  • Repair damaged electrical wires immediately.

Flame Safety:

  • Keep burning candles, mosquito coils, and lamps away from children. Also, ensure that they do not come in contact with furniture, curtains, or other flammable objects.
  • Use an ashtray to extinguish cigarettes. Do not throw cigarettes into trash bins.

Firecracker Safety:

  • Wear cotton clothes when lighting firecrackers.
  • Guide children properly while handling firecrackers.
  • Never attempt to relight a firecracker once it fails to light.
  • Light firecrackers in open areas away from houses and trees.
  • While lighting firecrackers, keep a bucket of soil nearby for safety in case of fire.

After a Fire:

  • Plan with your family on how to escape in case of a fire. Identify safe areas outside the home.
