Fire Safe Buildings

Multi-story buildings are often at a higher risk of fire. However, fires can be prevented. The following preventive safety measures should be taken:

Do the following:

• Get complete information about the building's design, exit routes, stairways, emergency exits, and fire alarm locations.
• Learn how to handle firefighting equipment available on each floor and teach security personnel as well. Also, provide training to use the required technology for extinguishing fires.
• Ensure that firefighting equipment is in good condition and ready for use.
• Perform regular emergency drills to ensure you know how to evacuate.
• Even if the fire is small, immediately call the fire department.
• Consult the fire department for safety-related advice.
• Provide the fire department with information about the location and size of the fire, and any trapped individuals.

Do not do the following:

• Avoid obstruction in the building's courtyard. Do not store any items in the courtyard. Open spaces are necessary to keep firefighting equipment during emergencies.
• Ensure that no obstacles block the access route or staircase. Emergency routes must remain clear.
• Do not keep fire doors open on staircases. In an emergency, smoke or heat may enter the stairway, making it difficult for people to escape.
• Never use the lift during an emergency evacuation.
• Do not use spaces with electric meters for storage, garbage, or for staff to live in. Such areas are highly risky in case of fire.
• Do not store flammable materials in the balcony during Diwali. Also, do not dry clothes outside the house during this time.
• Firecrackers cause many unfortunate incidents.
• Do not use the basement without permission. Due to a lack of oxygen, it can pose a threat to people's lives.
• Keep electronic ducts closed to prevent the spread of fire.
• Ensure AC ducts do not carry smoke or heat from one floor to another. The heat and smoke can spread to other parts of the building through these ducts.
• Do not paint fire detectors or sprinkler heads. This can make them ineffective.
• Do not use wood for design purposes in common corridors. It increases the risk of fire.
• Never disable the fire/smoke detection system. This can make it difficult to get alerts in case of a fire.
• After a fire breaks out, do not turn off the building's electricity. This can also stop fire safety and firefighting systems.
• Always consult the fire department before making any changes to the building.
